Among the passengers by the Manapouri, which arrived from Sydney yi sterday was Mr James Napier, who has been appointed to manage the smelting works of the Endeavor Inlet and Antimony Company Mr Napier came from London l>y the s.s. Ilieria, and then shippej from Sydney by the Mannponri. He has had a very extended experience in antimony works, having been in charge of Messrs Pontefex and Woods copper and antimony business, at Millwall. anJ having also been manager of the large copper works at Swansea. Before leaving London he arranged with Mi* John Bo wen, who hag been trained under Mr Napier, to come out in the Coptic, and fill the position of foreman of works at Endeavor Inlet, and that gentleman reached Wellington today. All the ironwork for the furnaces has already arrived in the Rimutaki, and will "be shipped on to its destination tomorrow by the Charles Edward, which has been chartered for the purpose. Mr Napier and his foreman will also go by the same vessel. Two centrifugal pulverisers liavt? just arrived, and a Blako— Mai-sden stone crusher and a quantity of tools are on their way out in the Hurunm. When the works are complete there will lw 24 furnaces in all, and the company will employ somewhere about seventy five men, but it is only intended to proceed gradually with the erection of the furnaces, and some of them will be ready l»y the end of the year, when I active smelting operations will commence. Lady Whitmon* was a passenger to day in the Coptic, having come out in that vessel from England. CItRISTCHURCH 8. Mrs Johnston, wife of Judge, Johnston, died at Peel Forest last night.
