SALA ON NEW ZEALAND.
Let as see what, since 1537, has been . done with these magnificent isles, com- • prising, as they do, an area which has been variously estimated at between 100,000 and 140,000 square milesdone, too, in spite of continuous and , sanguinary battles with a singularly hardy and gallant native race. The population of the colony, according to the corrected returns of the census taken in 1881, exceeded half a million, exclusive of the Maoris, who may l»e roughly estimated at between 40,000 and 50,000, while the übiquitous John Chinaman was 4000 strong. The contingent of Celcstia's included only nine Chinese females, and these were in all probability the offspring of Chinamen who had married white women. As for the products of New Zealand, the annual yield of the gold mines may be set down at an average of £900,000. Between April, 1867 and March 28, 1884, gold to the value of 40 millions sterling was ex* ported from New Zealand. Silver, copper, iron, tin, coal, and sulphur have l>een found in various localities. Building stone, marble, and granite are extensi vely quarried.
