♦ _— The monthly meeting of the Council was held on Monday last at lOo'clo.k. Present: Tlse Chairman ("Mr W. [rving) and (Vs. 'Dijncrm, Menteath, Campbell, M'Ginley and Craig. The minutes of previous meetings were read and confirmed. CoKRIsroNDENCF. To W. G. M inly, ceusiu enumer-n-tor, explaining County boundary at Inaugnhna Junutionand recommending F. Smilh, Reefton, as deputy en numerator. To Minister of Mines, asking for balance of vofo for construction of Big Piivt-r ros-.d. Alpo re grant for construction of Owen rord, and stating tlmt the ssiiin of £500 is inadequate. To K. Rci-vi-8, Wellington, re vote for Owen roar!. . To — Elliott, Bpnnnerton, offering for pale the GWn|y diainoiid drill at £1250. « On the motjon ol Cr. From Putrifk O'Eegan claiming payment of JSIO, being balance due on contract. Mattel referred to County Engineer. From J. Pollock, similar claim for £9 10. Referred to S)l:c : trr. From R. Cox, asking for reconsideration of his claim for compensation, the amount sustained being estimated at £06 10s. Referred to County Solicitor. The Chairman said the next matter to be dealt with was the question of the re-appointment or otherwise, of the rate collector, whoso appointment would expiie in (he m/mlb/)!" •Linuan*. Cr. Menteath thought in the present condition of County finance it might be advisable to see if tiiey could not effect a saving, by having .the work done by tender. Cr. Duncan thought tint would l-e \\\s fairest way of settling the question. Cr. Craig thought the Council should be careful in the step they took in the matter. Cr. Campbell was of opinion that they could dispense with the separate office of rate collector, and mike titrates payable to the cleik, who could l>e appointed to receivo thi;iu. There was a difficult time in store for tho Council in the, future, and economy was absolutely necessary. Cr. Craig said the Council having decided not to accpfc tho Property Tax Valuation, if the-y dispensed with the services of the collector a value: 1 would have to be appointed to make the assessment. Cr. Menfeaflfnif^rlit it w-ts a mistake- not lo h:ive adopted the Property Tax asse^ment, and suggested tint j steps should \>e liikcn to rescind tht : former motion. The Chairman pointer! ov.t that there would hardly be tim»- to rescind tlie resolution now, as the determination of the Council had to b« forwarded to the Government by the Ist J.inuavy, which would not allow time to lioid another special meeting. Cr. Camp!>eU moved that the se? vices of tliH rate collector be dispensed with at the expiration of the term of his current appointment. A long discussion ensued as to the h»gt course to pmv-uie, when it was finally agreed to let the matter stand over until the following day. The Chairman said the next business was to settle the question of printing and advertising, as the current. contract will expire at thp end of January next. It was then resolved that tenders he invited for printing and advertising fnr t'je ensuing year, to e'es^ on thai 28th January. The meeting then adj urned.
