crashing of sixty-two tons of stone at the Justin-Time hattery yesterday, the yield being thirty-two ounces of gold. The winze going down at the south end of the level has reached a depth of 10ft., and the reef shows a thickness of 3ft.
The Welcome battery was expected to resume crushing last night The stone now coming forward is said to be exceptionally rich.
Mr W. Molloy, successor to Mr W. G. Collings, took possession yesterday, and will carry on the business in future.
There was a capital muster of the Inangahua Rifles on Monday evening last, and the company under Lieut. Spence went through a couple of hours' hard drilling, the men acquitting themselves very creditably. Lieut. Spence left for Westport yesterday morning, but returns to Reefton hy this evening's coach, and has arranged to devote another evening to the muubers, who evince such a commend able interest in their drill. For this purpose another special parade of both the members of the Rifles and Cadets has been called for this evening, at the usual hour, when it is hoped there will be another full attendance. •
Owing to unexpected delay on the passage down from Nelson to Westport the management of the Cogill Minstrel Company have had to make some alteration in the advertised fixtnres, their coastal engagements not allowing the company to visit Reefton until after their season at Hokitika, Kuinara, and Greymouth. This change in the programme is as annoying to the management as it will no doubt be to the public here, but, as the saying goes, Needs must when a certain (very) sable penonage drives. ; Thr>M»P*ny wiM therefore continue their journey by sto, playing at Reefton on the way back from Hokitika.
Mr Garven, County Engineer, left for Hampden yesterday morning, at which place a number of important County works are, or will shortly b« in progress. The chief of these is the widening of the Murchison road, the contract for which has boen ler to W., Campbell and Co. Under the Crown Lands Rating Act the Inangahua County Council has during the past few years drawn a considerable amount of revenue from the Hampden Riding, the area of which is very large. The repeal of the Act in question, however, cuts of that source of income, so that the Hampden people have to thank their representative in the Council for looking afttr their interests in good time.
The steamer Triumph, which lefi Wei lin«ton ahout the 7th July, with passengers and horses for Kimberley, has arrived safely at Port Derby, after a fairly good run. As several Reeftonit<« were passengers by her, we may shortly expect to hear from them. Owinjr to the lateness of the season it is unlikely that any but the hardiest and most adventurous of the band will venture on the journey from Derby to the gotf field until the wet season sets in. It will he seen hy our cablemessages this morning that latest official reports from Kimberiey say that gold is being got, but that water is scarce.
It is understood, says the Ohristchurch Star, that Mr Seddon, M H.R., has accepted most, if not all, the suggestions made in the circulars sent from the Cliristchurch auctioneers. The Auctioneer's Bill would have come on on the 23rd inst. being a private members day, l>ut owing to the stonewalling of the new Dog Taxation Bill which certain owners of sporting dogs indulged in, the further consideration was postponed.
Mr W. J. Shaw announces that in order to clear off his extensive and varied stock of ladies, gentlemen's, and children's hoots and sho^s he has decided upon making still further reduction in his prices, and is now selling at twenty-five percent, below any other establishment in Reefton.— Advt.
