Communications are passing between the Government of New South Wales and Victoria, with a view to the prevention of the threatened increase of the cable tariff between Australia and New Zealand. The Victorian Goven.. ment, it is understood, favors a general contribution by the Colonies to all the Australian cables, on the basis of population. Warren, Superintendent of the Eastern Extension Telegraph Co., at Low Heads, Tasmania, has wired to the London office of the company, suggesting that the proposed increase in the tariff be postponed for a month, to allow of further negotiation*. The delegates of the employees are now engaged in stating theirs. Intelligence is to hand that a French military post has been formed at Hebrides. The intended increase in the charges between Australia and New Zealand from the Ist prox. is meeting with great disfavour here, and it is probable the Government of this Colony will be urged to join with New Zealand in renewing the subsidy, in order to secure a reduction of the tariff. The attendance was large and the weather fine. The Home team, who yesterday lost five wickets for 55 runs, continued their I * innings, but only succeed in compiling 139 runs when the last wicket fell. In addressing a meeting at Toulouse yesterday, Freycinet, French Premier, declared that the Government considered further Colonial acquisitions on the part of France were not desired, hut that they were determined to retain those which France already possessed. He expressed a hope that such a solution of the present difficulty wilh regard to New Hebrides would be arrived at as would be in conformity with the dignity of France. Sophia, 28. General Hnlbars lias intimated to the Regency that if the meeting of the Grand Assembly is not delayed the Russian Government will regard the decisions of that body as invalid.
