Auckland, 80. The Military Land Claims Commissioners have been busily engaged since their their arrival here Investigating claims to land grants. Over 350 claims have been submitted to them . They were occupied a considerable time yesterday inquiring into a claim presented by Major Walmsley, on behalf of the members of the Auckland defence force, who were enrolled for service in the Waikato, under the command of the late Colonel Nix<>n. Intelligence has been received from Tanpo to the effect that Ruapahu and Tnngarim are quiet. The appearances seen from Matamata yesterday were owing to a pile of clouds, which was mistaken for steam. To-day a good view of both mountains was obtained. They are thickly covered with snow. Tongariro was steaming, but not more than usual. There was no earthquake,. nor alarming signs of any kind. Important discoveries of richly mineralised quartz have been made on the east side of the Great Barrier Island. Four analysis have just been made of the stone from different reefs. The lowest of which gives 13dwts of gold and 7oz of silver per ton, and the highest 6oz of gold and IGozs of silver per ton.
