(from our own correspondent. ) IvUMABA, 7 At a public meeting largely attended last night, the Mayor presiding, the following resolutions were carried unanimously : — (1). That in the best interests of the colony it is absolutely necessary for the Grey-Hokitika railway to be so deviated as to connect Kumar a ; that unless this is effected a Rerious injury will be done to the inhabitants of this part of the colony, and the railway if made on the direct route, will not pay. That the proposed deviation will permit of lines with easy grades and less altitude than reported on to the Minister of Public Works, who has refused the deviation without a correct knowledge of the configuration of the locality. The meeting strongly urges a further survey, which can easily be effected before the bridge can he constructed. (2). The meeting strongly urge upon tho Government the r ©cessity of at once putting in hand the survey of the branch line from Kumnra to Lake Brunner, as shown on the plans attached to Mr Blair's report on the lands traversed by the East and West Coast railway. Rotorua, 7 Mr and Mrs George Beetlmm teturned from Rhotomahana and Tara* wera yesterday. Mr Hutchison, the engineer who accompanied them, considers that the White Terrace is merely buried. The party ascended Mount Tarawera, and had a full view of the crater. They state that the scene of desolation was iudiscribable. Nelton, 7 Mr Price Williams, who was sent from England on behalf of a company having a capital of L 15.000, to inspect the coal lease at Collingwood, expresses himself well satisfied with the ippearance of the mine. He had coal removed from the face and tried on the steamer coming to Nelson, and in the locomotive on the railway, and waa well pleased with the results.
