The outward sea-going mail by way of Sao Francisco will closf at the Queenstown post office on Sunday afternoon next. Mr B. Rogers announces that he will be a candidate for re-election for Shotover riding at the triennial election next month. Mr Rogers, has on the whole proved himself a fearless and honest representative, worthy of an important electorate. Our Head of Lake correspondent's letter contains interesting mining and other local news. Mr J. George is to open his election campaign at Glenorchy on Monday next. A rery heavy thunder storm visited this district on Monday night and rain continued nearly all the following day. No loss is reported beyond a slip on the Arrow-Macetown rosd. The following are the names of the local team chosen to play in the cricket match tomorrow—Arrow v. Queenstown, on the home ground :—Messrs J. Mehatfey, J. Robertson, M. J. Gavin, A. Boyne junr., J. Rsid. J. Gardiner, G. Reid, A. P. Wing, D. Simmons, A. Anderson, and A. Murdoch. Play to commence at noon sharp. Presbyterian services will be conducted by the Rev R. H. Blair on Sunday next as follows:—Gibbston (communion) 11 a.m.; Arrowtown, 2 30. p.m. ; Prankton, 3 p.m. ; and Queenstown, 7 p.m. Services will be conducted in the Church of England on Sunday, 25 October, 11 a.m. (H. C.) at Queenstown ; 7 p. m. Arrowtown Rev. A D. Mitchell—Also, on Monday, 26th Glenorchy, at 8 p.m. On Sunday last, at St. Peter's Church, special reference was made to the death of the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Rev. A. D. Mitchell, quoting the words of the late Dean Church, that he used on the occasion of Bishop Benson's elevation to the Archbishopric, in 1882, vii:—•• Everything that he has touched he has done well. He is quiet, and he is enthusiastic, and he is conciliatory, and he is firm." The preacher added that be thought the late Archbishop had left a mark upon the church that would never be effaced. The Holy table of St. Peter's was vested in purple, and the pulpit, the prayer desk, and the lectern were draped—while the choir, with good effect, sans; special hymns. At the close of the service the congregation stood while the organist, with expression, played the Dead March in Saul. A Bullendale correspondent writes :—The Bachelors Ball, which was to have been held here on Friday evening was spoilt by the fire—the Phcenix Hotel being burnt down, the fire starting at about a quarter to twelve on Thursday night. As Mr Horn, the landlord, had the supplying of all the refreshments and accessories necessary in affairs of this sort, he could not of course carry out this portion.of the programme. Many intending visitors had sent their dresses forward, and these were all destroyed. It was thought by the members of the committee that they ought to send word to as many as possible that the affair would be postponed, and this was done. As things turned out this was nrt the wisest course to adopt for a good number of young people from a distance came on. The committee then felt they should do something to entertain their visitors, so they decided to have a dance and make things as comfortable as they could for all concerned. That they succeeded goes without saying, for dancing was kept up till daylight, songs, recitations, step-dances, etc., being interspersed as opportunity offered, and the opinion was generally expressed that a very pleasant night had been spent, while those who could not join in the evening's amusement had the hearty sympathy of every one in our small community; and I feel some intending visitors will also regret to know that the loss to Mr and Mrs Horn and family, was almost a total one, as they barely escaped with their lives and did not save a single article or stitch of clothes except their night dresses A petition for the winding up of the 6rm of Walter Guthrie and Co, (Limited) has been presented to the Supreme Court by the Bank of New Zealand, and will be brought before Mr Justice Williams in Wellington. It is understood that no opposition will be offered to the matter of the winding up order. It is stated that none of the companies allied to Walter Guthrie and Co. (Limited) will be affected by the proceedings. In oar advertising columns appears a notice by Mr A. E. Smith, surgeon dentist, who has taken over the premises in Dee street, Invercargill, in which he lately acted as manager for Mr R. J.... B. Yule. Mr Smith, we are informed, is a gentleman thoroughly qualified in his profession, he having, previous to his arrival in Invercargill, acted as manager also for a first class London dentist, who carried on an extensive business in Auckland. No doubt a dentist with the latest and most improved methods in his profession, such as we understand Mr Smith is possessed of, will meet with success in such a large district as the one which his advertisement states that he intends making the field of his operations. The annual meeting of the local Jockey Chjb is advertised for Monday afternoon.
