After them followed the Waimate, Invercargill City, Dunerllu Engineers, Timaru, Dunedin Garrison, and Citiaens. Rain fell very heavily, interfering With the latter contingents performance. T. Graves, Invercargill Garrison, won the trombone solo, ana F. Home, Dunedin Navals, second ; and W. J. Siddall, Invercargill Garrison, third. In the E. flat bombardon solo, Sinclair of the Oamaru Gaf rison won. In the tenor horn solo, Boyd, of the Dunedin Engineers was first. Croxford, Dunedin Engineers, took first for tener bb flat'solo bombardon, and M'Glashan, Ksikorai, first b flat corqet solo. Forbes, Idvercargill City, secured first barritone solo. The Garrison Hall was crowded last night at the playing ofthe contest piece—l2 bands being engaged in it. At the North Otago Spring race-meeting; the Hurdles was Won by Lobo; £2 ss. Maiden—Plotter ; dividend, £1 I3s. Publicans' Handicap—Marlin ; dividend, £2 Is. Spring Handicap—Lord Rosslyn > diridend, £2 17s. Elderslie Trot—Beware; dividend, £3l 16s. Novel— Rothamstead ; dividend, £llos. Ladies' Bracelet—Glemf j; dividend, £9 7s. Flying—Florence; dividend, £9 12a. At the Wanganui races the Derby was won by St. Paul, with Defiance and Coeur de Lion respectively. MrT. M'Kenzie, M.H.R., left yesterday per the northern express, amidst the cheers of admiring friends. The mission steamer, Dayspring, is a total wreck on the coast of New Caledonia. A boat containing six of the crew is missing. Magnificent country and splendid lakes in New Guinea have been discovered by Sir Wm. M'Gregor. The natives are friendly. A cable message states that the shareholders of the Midland Railway Company of New Zealand have requested the receiver to raise sufficient to pay the colonial govern' ment, and proceed with the directors' scheme for carrying oh the works, so as to prevent foreclosure.
