Yesterday. The Board met &c 3 p.m., at the Foxton Athenaeum. Present — Messrs Thynn«, Easton, Cobb, and Carter. The Gazette notice fixing the date of the first meeting was red.. TOE CHAIR3IANBHIP. Mr Cobb propped Mr Thynne. Seconded by Mr Easton. | i Mr Thynne eaid he was quite willing to accept the office, as he was desirous of seeing the things work smoothly, and success* fully. He desiied to thank those present * for returning him. THE CLEBKfIHg, . The Chairman proposed—" That MrW. G. Robinson be appointed Clerk to the Board, at a salary to be afterwards fixed by a sub-committee." Seconded by Mr Carter, and carried. THE VALUATION*. . The Chairman aaid a copy of the valuation Hat for Xo. 3 Ward of the old Board - for 1881 • 18S2 had been received from the valuer appointed by the * Manawatu Highways Board. As they bad been for a year past desirous ef separating from the old Board, and had told them so, he thought their action in spending money for this valuation was uncalled for. He would sugge3G that the list be returned to the Manawatu Board, vvith an intimation that they did not want it. The Judge- of the Assessment Court had suggested to him that application should be made for 14days' " extension of time, for preparation of valuation list, by which means he would be able to arrange that the Assessment Court would be held bo as to enable the rate to be struck at once, instead of being detained ■ three months, as would be the case if the l valuation list were thrown out. Resolved, " That application be made for 14 days' extension of time from time of gazetting for preparation of the valuation list ; also, that the valuation list for No. 3 Ward be returned to the Manawatu Highways Board as of no use to this Board." RATEABLE VAI.CE OF THE WARDS. The Chairman eaid he had asked Mr Robinson to draw up a table of the rateable value of the different Wards : — The follow* ing was the result :— * £ s. d. * . ■-. Saunders : — "I beg to apply for permission to lay a tramway on the road leading to Mr Robin- ■ son's property, past Mr Symons', which t believe is called the Wellington-Fbxtbai.i road, for the purpose-of bringing in gravel 4, for my reclamation contract. If you grant this concession, 1 think it. will be a great advantage to the Board, as, when I have . finished, there will be a good gravel pit left which the Board might arrange to get** 1 gravel from for rood purposes at less than half the present cost. — J. Saunders." vThe Chairman thought they should give Mr Saunders the permission asked for. If the Board were not favorable to this proposal, Mr Saunders would ask them to pay a small amount for metalling the 40 chains of road between the present metalled part and the pit. Resolved — "That permission be granted to Mr Saunders to form a tramway on the side of the road past Mr C. Symons', on condition that he leaves the road in as good a state of repair as it is at present." WORKS TO BE DOXE. The Chairman said that according to the ; wish expressed at their informal meeting, ho had had specifications prepared for the works required iv Wards Nos. 2 and 5. Resolved — "That tenders be called, to* close 14 days from date, for contracts Nob. 1. 2, and 3in No. 2 Ward, and in No. 5 Ward." Resolved, "That tenders be called for clearing undergrowth on road from Mr Thynne's iron gate to M'Pherson's ridsje." A letter was received from Messrs Rousall and J. A. Smith, re work wanted near their properties, but it was pointed out that the request preferred would be granted by the carrying out ot one of the contracts in No. f» Ward. Mr Easton brought up the necessity of a cross road beiug formed to join the Mou*oa road aud upper Avenue. It was resolved, •' That tenders bo called for clearing ti-tree and forming the road from the upprr boundary of Mr Eiston's property to Perreau's corner, M >utoa Road, the formation to be 18ft wide, a 4-foot drain on both sides of the road, and place the soil oh the centre of the road ; to cut through the ridge tothe levels shown, and ti-tree the slopes of the same ridge. ' GORSE. Mr Easton called attention to gorse on road in his Ward. The Chairman marie a similar complaint regarding Mr Nye's property. Resolved. "That notices be served on Messrs H. Wil*oD. Gordon, and G. Nye, in accordance with section 38 of the Highway* Act, to cut the gorse on their property, growiug or encroaching on the road." MISCELLANEOUS. The Bank of Australasia was appointed . the Board's Bank. The Secretary was authorised to apply to the Manawatu Highways Board fora statement of accounts, and a cheque for the balance. Mr Cobb was appointed Treasurer to tho Board. The office of the Board was. fixed at Mr W. G. Robinson s office. The Board resolved that all tenders he advertised in the Manawatu Herald, the opinion being oppressed by all the members that "Advertising paye." The next meeting will be held on Friday, February 4, at 3 p.m. IMPOUSMXG FROM HIGHWAYS. The Chairman called attention to the importance of all highways being declared subject to the provisions of sectien 25 of " The Impounding Act, 1874." A resolution to that effect was passed.
