We understand that, tho Government do not intend to make another appointment in placa of Mr Jenkins, who recently resigned his position as pilot at the mouth of the Rangitikei river, and it is therefore prol>al>le that in a short time the siirnal staff will be dismantled, and the Rangitikei pilot service abolished. The Government >ir« prompted to this course by the necessity •f retrenchment, ms an average of only two vessel* per month enter the river, and if ia considered the prospects of the Rangitikei trade are not sufficient to warrant the continuance of an expenditure of £150 per annum as salary of a pilot, in addition to other expenses.
