.Tpe AgentrGeneral for Victoria, Mr Murray Smith, has delivered a lecture at the Royal Colonial Institute dn the subject of Australian federation. There was a large attendance of colonists and officials, besides representatives from the different colonies, Mr Smith, throughout his lecture, strongly advocated the establishment of a federal union among the Australian colonies, aiid predietcd-agreat future for Australasia undetf'sucU a union. Mr Blyfch, Agent-General for S6uth Australia, and Mr Cowderoy, Secretary for the Melbourne Chamber of Commerce, also made short speeches m favor of federation. Mr Samuel, Agent-General for .' ew South Wales, also spoke, but regarded the attempt ''made to secui-6 federation at this early stage of the ex-
istence of the colonies as premature. He added that 1113 opinion was that a successful couclusion of the labors of the Sydney Convention was very improbable. Mr John Mclntyre, member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly, also spoke, and condemned the omission of the subject of the Australasian federation, from the Queen'sSpeech on the opeuing of Parliament.
