Education Board.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Wanganui Education Board was held m the Board's office yesterday. There were present — Messrs Wact (chairman), Sauson, Badge, Boss, Bate, Taplin, Carson, and Snelson. The Board's Inspector was also present. New Member. — Mr Baker took his seat as a new member. Mr Baker's name was lidded to the finance and building committee. Appointment Committe. — The following business was transacted m committee : — A letter from Palmeratou re assistant-mistress. One to be appointed when the attendance warrants. — Mrs Kedman resigned from Feilding. Accepted ; appointment of a successor left to the Inspector. Letter from Fox ton School Committee recommencing Mr Forsyth for the vacancy, and letters from other applicants; resolved that all applica-., tions be forwarded to the Foxton Committe with, recommendations m favor of Mr Hill and Mr Everiss, and pointing out that the Board preferred that a Board's teacher lie appointed. — Atfbursi Committee wrote lor pupil teacher, offering to pay salary to end of the year; agreed that the committee were to pay till the attendance warranted a teacher. — Miss Preridergast appointed a cadet ac Bunny thorpe. r-^-Letter of Mr McDonald, Rangitikei, re salary, forwarded to committee. — Upper Taonui : !Mr Templar appointed, subject to preliminary examination. —Application from Miss Rose, Sanson, for a position under the Board ; name to be forwarded to Feilding with other applications. Pupil Teachers' Examination.— The jlnspeotor then read a voluminous report on the late examination of pupil teachers. 51 had presented themselves, 7 aa candidates, 17 as tii at year, 11 as second year, 8 as third . year, aud 8 as fourth year teachers. We regret we cannot give the report at length, owing to want of space. The luspector, m the beginning of his report, writes as follows : — " The results I must consider extremely unsatisfactory ; the work, more especially the dictation, spelling, composition, grammar, and geography, m mum' instances being disgraeelul, and showing extraordinary ignorance, not merely m the first year pupil teachers, bnt m some of all years. In composition it would not,*' he said, "be going too far to say that not more than a dozen of the whole, fiftyone could write ten consecutive lines of readable English." Harris, Saudon, 337 ; Lilian Cole, Foxton, 344; Jessie Begg, Bulls, 317; Ada Stanford, Makino Road, 182 ; failed. Second Years Teachers (940 marks highest obtainable). — A. Mathieson, Karerc, 721 ; passed, Li Randolph, Karere,4B2; Roberta Thompson, Bulls, 452 ; Florence Lush, Makino Road, 311; failed. Third Year Teachers, (1000 marks obtainable). — George Luwrenson, Foxton, 610; Henry Astbury, Palmerston 608 ; passed. Fourth Year Teachers, (1000 marks obtainable). — Nellie Thomson, Bulls, 599 ;- S. H. Rogers, Otaki, 593 ; passed. Ellen Ho wan, Foxtou, 4tf4,\ Margaret McLean, Waverley, 409; failed. . The Board adjourned for lunch.
