Manawatu Standard (PUBLISHED DAILY.) The Oldest Daily Newspaper on the West Coast. MONDAY, OCTOBER 13, 1884. THE MAYORALTY.
We very much regret to learn that it is Mr S nelson's firm determination not to again come forward as a candidate for the Mayoral chair- He has been urgently; solicited to allow himself to be nominated, but .has positively declined to do so. It will be a very difficult matter to find a suitable successor to Mr S nelson, who has spared neither time, trouble, expense, nor his own personal inclinations, m the interests of the Borough; and who from his long . experience with local municipal matters, and the special attention he has devoted to all questions appertaining to the progress and welfare of the place, has made his services to the Borough invaluable. In retiring from the position of Mayor of the Borough, Mr Snelson will take with him the esteem of the ratepayers as a body, and the warm personal friendship of all with whom he is intimate. We venture to say that the news of his determination to sever his connection with municipal matters will be received with genuine regret by all classes of the community. Mr Snelson has so completely gained the confidence of the public m his position as Mayor that many will be inclined to think that the affairs of the Borough will materially suffer when he is no longer at their head, and interesting himself publicly and privately to forward the interests of the town. We can only hope that his successor m office, whoever he may be, wifi worthily maintain the prestige which Mr Snelson can rightly claim 1 ' on account of his faithful discharge of public duty during his various terms of office. He leaves behind him an honourable and unblemished record, and has distinguished himself by continuous and self sacrificing exertions to further the advancement of the Borough by every means in~his power. We sincerely join m the universal regret that is expressed that Mr Snelson's services as chief Magistrate are, for a time at least, no longer to be at the disposal of the community, who wQuld only be too pleased to be afforded an opportunity of testifying to their high appreciation of the personal character of a fellow-citizen, who, m the position of Mayor, has served them so often, so faithfully, and so well.
