AUSTRALIAN SUMMARY.

(Per s.s Wairarapa at the Bluff J [by telegraph.] (united press association.) Melboubse, Nov. 11. A boiler explosion took place at a tannery m Richmond. One person was killed and four dangerously in* iured. The Prince of Wales' Birthday, celebrated yesterday, was characterised by the usual rejoicing?. The principal attraction was the grand review of the forces and a sham fight, m which the militia and naval forces combined. There was also racing at Willianistown, a monster Salvation Army gathering, and the usual excursions. The Spi ing Meeting of the Victoria Racing Club was brought to a close on Saturday last, and was the mont successful ever held. The weather was perfect, and the attendance far m excess of previous years. The protest lodged against Rufus for the V.R.C. Derby turns put not vory serious, being for alleged wrong pedigree. If sustained, whioh is unlikely, it will not effect bets. .The only unpleasantness of the meeting was occasioned by the Hon. W. Pearson, M.L.C., the owner of Coration and Frying Pan, accusing Mr Barnard, the iiandicapper of the club, of wilfully weighing Frying Pan out of a race. The stewards called upon Mr Pearson to apologise to Mr Barnard. The victory of Commotion m the Canterbury Plate was the most popular seen for along time. The spectators cheered enthusiastically when the horse was weighed m, and eveu the bookmakers, who lost their money, so far forget themselves as to swell the acclamations at his victory. A number of new animals have arrived for the Zoological Gardens, but unfortunately two of the most valu- . able, a tiger and a rhinoceros, died/ on the voyage. j^
