Young men's Mutual Improvement Society.
At the Wesleyan Hall last night the Young Men's Mutual Improvement Society held the first of their regular weekly meetings fort ho current session. The Revß. S. Bunn, President of the Society, took the chair, and announced the business of the meeting: to be the preparing of syllaiius for the term now commencing, and appointment of officers. A committee had been appointed to prepare draft of. syllabus, which was for the most part adopted. The subjects suggeßtftd for debate were as follows :r-(l) Do«s the element of cruelty jn fishing, hnnting, and shooting make them undesirable pastimes. (2) Would a' great increase m National wealth be likoly to affect society beneficially ©r injuriously. (3) Should corporal punishment m schools be abolished. (4) Is larrikinism tho outcome of tho presfint system of education. (5) Is the growth of morality disproportionate to the growth of knowledge. Was the rule of Cromwoll greatly instrumental m establishing England's grealneso ? Some of the above questions are to be discussed at meetings open to the public. The syllabus also comprised essaya, and short papers by junior members, readings and social gatherings. Tho election of officers resulted m the return of the Rev R. -S. Butm as Presi: dent ; Mr R. Leary, ViceJPresident ; Mr W. Kendall, Secretary ; Mr E. Dillon, Treasurer and Librarian. The businesp for next Monday is an essay on the question " Is horse-racing desirable hb a public pastime," to be followed by a discussion.
