The High School Board to-day selec ted Miss Watt (at present acting) as Lady principal at the girls' school, and Miss Cruickshank as second assistant. Wellington, October lfi.
The District Coroner, Mr J. Ashcioft, who has lately been directing attention to certain a pects of the condition of public morality, particularly in regard to the declining birth rate, arranged a conference of ministers of various denominations to discuss the matter. Tho conference was held today, and it was decided that another mooting be summoned, and also a conference with the medical practitioners.
Westport, October 16,
A dwelling house, owned by D. O'Neill, of Fiiirdown, was burnod down. The total loss was U350. The insurance is £140 in the Norwich Union.
Blenheim, October 15,
The Hospital Board has appointed Miss Fanny Gordon, a nurse in the Duncdin Hospital, as matron of the Wairau Hospital.
Napikh, October 15
There was beautiful weather for the postponed socond day of the A. and P. Show, and although the postponement undoubtedly militated against the attendance, over eight thousand were present. No sheep or cattle were on the ground, interest being confined to tho jumping competitions, and novel racea, wood-chopping, etc., and tho inspection of exhibits of machinery and produce.
Dunedin, October 15,
At the Otago University Mr E. B. Cargill, vice-chancellor, unveiled brass tablets erected by tho students to the memory of the late Professors T. J. Parker! CJ. H. Ulrich and C. M. Mouat. Ho referred to the valuable services of both professors and the bright proiniso of Mr Mouat.
Tho Anglican Diocesan Synod was opened this afternoon, Bishop Nevill delivering the presidential address. In tho evening at the Cathedral service he gave a review of the events of the nineteenth century. The closing of the eighteenth century he described as one of confusion ; the nineteenth as one of unification. Tho coming century would see such missionary zeal and power as would put to shamo the feeble efforts of the present and past.
