MANAWATU COUNTY.
lAIPROVEMENTS TO ROAD PLANT [Special to “Standard.”] FEILDING, Dec. 4. With a view to improving the machinery and equipment of their road and haulage plant, councillors of the Manawatu County Council witnessed a demonstration yesterday of the haulage abilities of a caterpillar tractor and a tractor lorry equipped with the caterpillar type of locomotion. The demonstration was given by Air C. Petersen, flaxriiiller, of Foxton, who uses this type of machinery in his flax swamps and very considerately placed it at the disposal of the council for the purpose stated. The tractor lorry particularly interested the councillors for, with an approximate load of 23 yards of metal, it had tho same road speed as a horse-drawn dray, but with much greater capabilities under wet and swampy conditions. The councillors werg very impressed with the possibilities of both types of machinery and it is understood that the purchase of similar vehicles is to be considered at the next meeting of the council.
