AUSTRALIAN STRIKE
WATERSIDE DISPUTE. HEAVY LOSSES SUSTAINED. STEAMERS DELAYED. (By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received December 4, v 10.5 a.m. MELBOURNE, Dec. 4. Although the waterside workers defied the Arbitration Court by refusing to call the “no overtime” strike off, so tar Judge Beeby has taken no action. Having disregarded Judge Beeby’s offer, the Watersiders’ Federation is now making efforts .to effect agreements with the different shipping companies by direct negotiation. Already agreements have been reached with two of the smaller companies the watersiders claiming that their terms have been agreed to.. Heavy losses are being sustained by both shipowners and shippers owing to the strike. Delays in the sailings of steamers from various Australian ports are frequent, some being four days behind schedule Several coastal vessels have been laid up and crews paid off.—Press Association.
