SOCIAL FUNCTIONS.

WEST END DANCE. The final euchre and dance of the series conducted this season under tho auspices of the West End School social committee was held last evening in the quadrangle. There was a very large number of patrons present and as a result of the effort the school funds will benefit to the extent of approximately £l3O, The hall was prettily decorated for the occasion and a professional orchestra supplied the music, Mr L. Purton acting as M.C. At a suitable juncture Mr C.' H. Whitehead (chairman of the school committee) addressed the assemblage, thanking all the householders who had worked so conscientiously in the interests of the school during the year. Ho also referred to those who had donated prizes for the functions and spoke in eulogistic terms of tho ladies’ committee which had assisted in every respect. Mr Whitehead, in conclusion, stated that it was the committee’s intention to continue the euchre and dance'series and that an c irly recommencement would be made next year. During the evening several dancing competitions were held, the prizes being awarded as follow:—Waltzing, Air and Mrs Harvey 1, Miss Morgan and Mr Vining 2; card dance, Mr Harvey and partner; lucky scat, Miss Smidt; lucky spot, Miss Caddy and Mr Green. In the euchre section the successful ladies were Mrs Zimmerman (ham), Mrs Thoreau (251 b. bag of flour), Mrs A. Jones (tongue), consolation, Mrs Smart; and in the men’s section, Messrs Newth (bag of sugar), Callaghan (iced cake), Prideaux (corned beef), Hands (teapot), Henderson (tin of biscuits), consolation, Mr Phillips.
