THE OROUA CLUB. OFFICIAL OPENING. AN ENJOYABLE AFTERNOON. There was a very large gathering of bowlers and interested spectators, including many ladies, at the official opening on Saturday afternoon of the Oroua Bowling Club’s green. This new Eeilding club—the fourteenth in the centre —has a very fine property off Denbigh street, entrance being gained by a right-of-way. Despite the fact that it was used for. the first time the green played excellently, revealing the great care that has been used in it,s construction. Tho club has quite a good pavilion, erected wholly by voluntary labour, while the immediate surroundings are nicely laid out in flower plots which include many roses and bedding plants which will soon be in full bloom. Tho club has also room for croquet lawns for the ladies.

Shortly after two o’clock the club president, Mr E. Goodbehere, addressed the large gathering, which included bowlers from all the Palmerston North clubs and Bulls, and from the sister club in Feilding. He traced the history of the formation of the club, pointing out that the present Feilding Club last year had a very large membership and the consequence at times was that some of the players could not be accommodated and were unable, therefore, to get a game when desirous. The idea of another club was mooted and taken up whole-heartedly and the position to-day was that each club had a nominal membership of about seventy, so that the formation of the new club would not greatly injure the older institution. He trusted that any feelings on the matter would be laid aside and both clubs work together for the welfare of the game. (Hear! Hear!). Mr Goodbehere paid a tribute to the enthusiasm of the members which had, with the assistance of friends, resulted in the erection of their pavilion by voluntary labour. He also referred to the excellent services of

Mr George Say well as green supervisor. Continuing; Mr Goodbeliere regretted that Mr J. A. Nash, president of the centre, was-unable to be present, he having been detained in Palmerston North, but he welcomed Mr A. IV Wimaett, secretary of the centre. Mr Goodbeliere then referred to the passing of Air W. G. Haybittle who, they had all hoped, would have been with them that day. He arid Air Haybittle had been foundation members of - the F’eilding Club, it having been formed thirty years ago at a time when there were only one or two clubs between Wellington and Wangafiui. They greatly deplored Air Haybittle’s death, tor he had been a good friend to the bowling community. In conclusion, the speaker welcomed the visitors and hoped that they would enjoy many games on their green, at the.same time mentioning that Terrace End and Feilding Clubs, had placed their greens at the disposal of the Oroua Club memberg until the latter’s property was available.

Miss Patricia Gdodbehere then threw the first, jack and. the '.green was declared .open. The matches arranged for the afternoon were then played, each game being of 16 heads. ’ A trophy of a cigarette holder, given by Air Reid, for the first skip to win his game, went to J. Tantrum (Takaro), who finished well ahead of any other rink with an easy victory. ■ At the conclusion of play Messrs J. H. Perrett (Bulls), J. Herdman (Feilding) and A. F. Wimsett (Alanawatu) thanked the Oroua Club for its hospitality and the ladies for providing such an excellent afternoon tea. Mr Herdman also assured the Oroua Club members of the hearty co-operation of his club in promoting the welfare of the game in Feilding and district. He wished the Oroua Club a most successful future.
