BIG FAMILIES
COALFIELDS COMPETITION.
LONDON, Nov. 24. A unique dispute has shaken the South Yorkshire coalfields where mining villages are arguing which is able to show the largest family. It began when a miner’s wife residing at Denaby bore her nineteenth child,. but Blackerhill possesses neighbours who are both fathers of twentytwo.
Another resident, with seventeen, offered to field a football team to play any other eleven brothers, but Mrs Austen, residing at Platts Common, put everyone else in the shade with her 24, besides four adopted children. One son weighs 16£ stone, and'a daughter 13 stone.
Mrs Austen says, “My children arA out to • beat my record. One of my daughters already has twelve children, and two others eleven each,’’
Nevertheless, the .Austens are anxiously watching a neighbouring family which has had twins: and triplets within thirteen months.
