LAWN TENNIS.
WHAKARONGO BEAT ASHHURST
The first tennis match of the season to be played on the Wdiakarongo courts took place on Saturday, when the local club met Ashhurst. Favoured with good weather the players spent an enjoyable afternoon, the home team eventually winning by 10 sets and 74 games to 6 sets and 61 games. During the afternoon refreshments were provided by the ladies. The following were the results, home players being mentioned first:—
Men’s singles: Vautier lost to McHardy 4—6; Oxenham lost to Searle 2—6; Clarke beat McDonnell 6—l; Gibbs lost to Scott I—6. < Ladies’ singles: Miss Thomson lost to Miss Vincent I—6; Miss G. Vautier beat Mrs Taylor 6—2; Miss C. Vautier lost to Miss Trass 3—6; Mrs Eggers beat Miss Brewer 6—l. Men’s doubles: Vautier and Clarke lost to McHardy and Searle 3—6: Oxenham and Gibbs beat McDonnell and Scott 6—5. Ladies’ doubles : Misses Thomson and G. Vautier beat Miss Vincent and Mrs Taylor 6—l; Miss C. Vautier and Mrs Eggers beat Misses Trass and Brewer 6—o.
Mixed doubles: Vautier and Miss Thomson beat McHardy and Miss Vincent 6 —l; Oxenham and Miss G. Vautier beat Searle and Mrs Taylor 6—2; Clarke and Miss C. Vautier beat McDonnell and Miss Trass 6—5; Gibbs and Mrs Eggers beat Scott and Miss Brewer 6—5.
