NO WELCOME

FOR VICEROY AT CALCUTTA. CALCUTTA, Nov. 26.. By 20 votes to 12, the Calcutta Corporation rejected a proposal to vote an address of welcome to tho Viseroy (Lord Irwin) who'will shortly be paying a month’s visit here. This maintains Calcutta’s churlish social boycott, which was first instituted by Gandhi, but which is now abandoned practically everywhere else in India. It is stated that the Swarajists are the strongest party in Madras, but are not willing to take office. Therefore a deadlock is now possible in three provinces—Madras, Bengal and Central Provinces. The Maharajah of Patiala has been re-elected Chancellor of the Chamber of Princes.
