TORRENTIAL RAINS.

RIVER OVERFLOWS RAILWAY. CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 7. Swollen by torrential rains on the West Coast and at Arthur’s Pass, the Waimakariri river was reported today to be rising rapiijly, and as the recent cold weather had given the hills a heavy coating of snow, it was anticipated that there would be another heavy flood. However, the warm nor’wester changed to a cool south-west wind early this afternoon, and light rain fell this evening. The latest' reports state that the danger of ths river rising abnormally is past. More trouble is reported on the railways on the Otira side owing to the heavy rain. A mixed train is held up between Jackson’s and Aicken’s, about five miles from Otira, owing to the river overflowing the line.
