UNITED STATES AHEAD.
IN NAVAL RACE. CRUISERS’ HEAVIER GUNS. LONDON, Dec. 1. The Daily Mail, commenting on the first disclosure in the current volume of Jane’s Fighting Ships of particulars of the new British cruisers of 10,000 tons, says that they make a distinctly disappointing comparison with the ships of the United States fleet. The British cruisers carry eight Bin guns and four 4in guns, whereas the Americans have ten Bin guns and six Sin. The British boilers and machinery are of the normal type, but the U.S.A. boilers are made for extra high pressures. It is also revealed that America has made more rapid development in regard to aircraft fittings, for the new American cruisers carry two catapults to launch aeroplanes at a speed of 60 miles an hour.
The Washington Naval Treaty limited the number of battleships that the Powers may build, but put no limit on the number of new warships up to 10,000 tons.
