STRANGE CASE

The following appeared in oni 4 p.m. edition yesterday:—-

FRENCH FARMER THRASHED. NEIGHBOURS BELIEVE HIM A SORCERER. Received December 8, 1.10 p.m. PARIS. Dec. 7. A strange case, proving the continued belief in sorcery in France and recalling the famous Desmoyers case, heard at Mayenne, where Auguste Guillot, a septaugenarian farmer, is suing eight neighbours for attempting to beat him to death, believing that Guillot had power to injure their cattle.

He alleges that they broke into his house and beat him with bludgeons. The next day he crawled to & neighbouring farm, but instead of being succoured he was again thrashed with sticks and dragged deep into a wood where he was left to die. He was discovered, however, and taken to hospital. The accused men in court pleaded that Guillot was a sorcerer and put spells on themselves and their children, and made their cattle dance. The court reserved judgment for a week.—A. and N.Z. cable.
