WOMEN’S NOTES

A pleasing function took place in the Utuwai Hall last Tuesday evening on the occasion of • Mr and Airs D. Gardner and family leaving the district. The gathering was very well attended, which showed the popularity and esteem with which the family was held. A suitable opportunity was taken to present the guests with a handsome travelling rug and a purse of sovereigns.

Airs Collingwood, one of Wanganui’s oldest residents, who resides at Stewart street, Upper Aramoho, had the misfortune this week to break a leg. Airs Collingwood, who lias reached the age of 93, was assisting in preparing the evening meal when she sloped and fell. Sho was conveyed to the hospital, where she is progressing favourably. Airs Collingwood is the mother of Airs D. W. Low, of Palmerston North.

At this week’s meeting of the Wanganui Education Board the services of Aliss P. Clieyne, who has been a teacher under the jurisdiction of the Wanganui Board for 42 years, were eulogised by Mr, W. Adams. The chairman of the board (Air W. A. Collins) also added a tribute of praise to Aliss Cheyne, who is. relinquishing the post of headmistress of the Whenuakura School. The board resolved to forward a letter to Miss Cheyne thanking her for her services and wishing her. every success.

The death occurred at Matiero on December 8 of Airs ,D. Shepherd, eldest daughter of Mrs and the late Mr W. I. Batt, of Palmerston North? Airs Shepherd was born in Palmerston North in 1876 and lived here until her marriage which took place in All Saints’ Church in 1906. With, her husband she left for Alatier'e, ■ where she had since resided. Some 12 months ago the deceased lady’s heart .became affected and indifferent health followed. On Wednesday sire became worse and passed quietly away. In addition to her husband there are left two sons, Alessrs Leonard and Wyatt Shepherd, and one daughter, Aliss Al. Shepherd, to mourn their loss.

Air and Airs T. George, of Carterton, on Tuesday celebrated their diamond wedding. A family reunion was held in the Clareville Hall where over 100 guests were entertained. Air and Airs George are New Zealanders by birth, Air George being born at Nelson and Airs George at Lower Hutt. Air George was the first white child born in Nelson. Airs George was a daughter of Air and Airs Youle, who farmed at Sunnyside, East Taratahi, and married Air George on December 7, 1886, the Rev. Ronaldson officiating. Air and Mrs George have resided in various parts of the Wairarapa. Of the family of ten, five sons and three daughters survive. There are also' 27 great-grandchildren. Air and Airs George, who are 83 and 81 years respectively, are both hale and hearty.

The new headmistress for the Auckland Diocesan High School for Girls, Aliss E. H. Sandford, arrived at Auckland from Sydney by the Marama on Wednesday. Aliss Sandford was educated at the Exeter High School and the Queen’s School, Chester, after which she went to Girton College, Cambridge. Sbe graduated with honours in classical tripos, and obtained her “blue” in hockey as captain of the hockey club. She gained the equivalent of a AI.A. degree at Cambridge, and holds the B.A. degree of the Dublin University. Having completed her university course, Aliss Sandford received an appointment to the staff of the Exeter High School, and was later on the staff of the Southland School, Exmouthy Since 1923 she has been second mistress of the Nottingham Girls’ High School. Tlio training at this school covers two years of post-matricu-lation work. The present principal of tho Auckland Diocesan High School is Aliss Al. E. Pulling, who has been in charge for 23 years. She will retire at Christmas.

CROQUET. The second round of inter-club matches under the auspices of the Alanawatu Croquet Association was played on the Takaro greens between Alanawatu and Northern. There was keen competition, the greens being very fast, while there was perfect weather. Results were as follow: Singles.—Airs Robertson (2£) Alanawatu, lost to Airs Gambrill (3) Northern ; Airs Robertson (41) Alanawatu, beat Airs Alayes (4) Northern, 26—20. Doubles.—Alesdaines Fuller (si) and Davies (5) lost to Alesdames AlcGill (5) and AlcLeod (5), 24—26; Alesdames AlcDonald (5) and Spring (4}) lost to Alesdames Hodgson (7) and Boyne (6), 23—26.
