ON EDGE OF CLIFFS
LIFE AND DEATH STRUGGLE. SUICIDE PREVENTED. DRAMA AT NOTORIOUS GAP. (United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received September 10, 9.30 a.m. SYDNEY, Sept. 10. A life and death struggle was staged on the brink of The Gap last night. Two tramwaymen noticed a man aged about 45 walking toward the cliffs and followed him. The man, who was over six feet in height and about 13 stone in weight, discarded, his coat, leapt the protecting fence and made for the edge. The tramwaymen sprang after him and a desperate struggle ensued, the three men sometimes being only a few feet from the brink. Later, however, the man broke down and sobbed. He admitted that he had intended to commit suicide, saying: “My wife is to blame.” The man was well-dressed, and with a cultured voice that bespoke a good education. He was handed over to the police.
