SCHNEIDER CUP

KING’S CONGRATULATIONS.

(United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) (British Official Wireless.) Received September 9, 11 a.m. RUGBY, Sept. 8. “Hearty congratulations to Flying Officer Waghorn and to the Royal Air Force on the splendid success in the race for the Schneider Trophy.” This message from the King was read at the banquet to the Schneider Tropliv teams, which was held on board the liner Orford last night, when the trophy was presented to Flying Officer Waghorn by Sir Philip Sassoon. The Prime Minister was a guest. The newspapers to-day express the greatest satisfaction at the achievement of the British team in what is described as tho greatest race in flying history. , Ti ,. The gallant failure of the Italian team is the subject of as keen and ungrudging admiration as tho success of the British. The Observer states: “It was a race won by the best machine. The pilots handled • their ’planes in a fashion worthy of the great contest, and it was the fact that the capabilities of the Macchi machines fell short of the British Rolls Rovce that decided the race.” the contest for the Schneider Trophy is to be followed by another thrilling event on Tuesday, when the British are to make an attempt on the world’s speed record over a straight course of three kilometres. It is probable that one of the Schneider RollsRoyce machines which took part in to-day’s race will compete, and it is expected that, on a short course which can be preceded by a dive, the machine will reach a speed of more than 359 miles an hour; i.t is even suggested that a speed of 3/0 miles an hour may possibly be attained. The Italians are also anxious to try, and have applied for permission.
