BY-LAW OFFENDERS

Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., presided over yesterday’s sitting of the Magis-

trate’s Court. L. J. H. Petersen, who had no tail light on his motor cycle, was fined 10s with 10s costs. P. R. Nathan, for parking a car more than 10 feet out from the kerb, was fined 10s with 10s costs. For cycling without lights, R. G. Gray was fined 10s with 3s costs, while J. Towler and I. Young were each fined 10s with 10s costs, for similar offences. Charged with haying no driver s license and with having driven a motor car over a railway crossing when a train was approaching, I. Wallace was fined 10s with 10s costs, on the first charge and £2, with 12s costs, on the second charge. Senior-Sergeant Whitehouse stated that defendant, who pleaded guilty, had driven the car over the crossing by the Post Office when the New. Plymouth express was only oO yards away. The warning bells weie ringing at he time. For parking his car without. lights, N Lawrence was fined £1 with 10s costs. V. Hanna, who parked his car for longer than the 20 minutes allowed in the area, was fined £l, with 3s costs, it being his second similar offence. J. M. Pearson and D. Fraser were each fined £l, with 10s costs, for having failed to give a signal when turning their motor vehicles to the right from traffic.

FAILING TO SIGNAL,

A. Just- was proceeded against for having failed to give a signal when turning to the right and with failing to sound his horn. Defendant, who was represented by Mr Laurenson, pleaded not guilty. The senior-sergeant said that defendant was driving a motor truck and a car was following. He was said to have turned to the right and had only put out his hand as he was actually turning. He had failed to sound his hom also, and a collision had occurred. * Mrs E. Bary stated that she was driving a car behind defendant and he had not sounded his horn or signalled with his right hand before commencing to In evidence, defendant said that lie had put out his hand before commencing to turn. He had known that there was a car behind him, but, as there had been no other traffic in the street, he had not considered it necessary to sound his horn. He had actually put out his hand when his truck was about 30 feet from where he had commenced to turn. In fining defendant £1 on each charge, the Magistrate said that it seemed plain that defendant had heen at fault. Defendant was also ordered to pay costs. ' SELLING -ON SUNDAY. John Duhovieh, for selling goods on a Sunday, was fined £2, with 10s costs, and ordered to pay £1 witnesses’ expenses. s “A young man was given money by a constable to make a purchase in the shop and he bought one shilling’s worth of chocolates,” said the senior-sergeant. Defendant pleaded guilty to the charge.
