PAHIATUA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) PAHIATUA, Sept. 10. The monthly meeting of the Women’s Division of tho Farmers’ Union was held on Tuesday afternoon, Mrs W. Gilbert presiding. It was reported that tho dances at Ballance and Tane had proved most successful, over £8 being thereby added to tho general fund. CELEBRATION DANCE AT HAMUA. Tho Hamua Hall on Friday evening was crowded for the dance organised by the local football and nockey players in celebration of Hamua’e victorious athletic achievements. A Dannevirko orchestra supplied excellent dance music for tho occasion. Messrs R. Kiddie and 11. Russell made admirable M.C.’s. Tho function was an outstanding success attributable in no small measure to the thoroughness and energy displayed by tho joint secretaries, Mrs M. Davies and Mr W. Ryan. During the evening the chairman of the Bush Rugby Union (Mr K. J. Smith) presented the Cowan and the Cooke Cups to the Hamua team. The latter cup has been won outright, being annexed by Hamua on five occasions. Tho carnival in aid of tho instrument fund for the local band is exciting the keenest interest. A large crowd gathered at the euchre party and dance held at Ruawhata to further the candidature of Miss Phyllis Mills. A successful concert was held in the King’s Theatre on Sunday night to assist Mrs Fairwcather’s prospects. On Thursday evening last the King’s Theatre was crowded to its full capacity when the Maori Methodist mission party paid its annual visit to Pahiatua. Rev. W. B. Pickering, on behalf of tho local Methodist Church and residents, extended a hearty welcomo to the visitors, one of whom replied in Maori. Rev. A. J. Seamer, who was in charge of tho party, interpreting the reply. A comprehensive programme cf songs, poi dances, instrumental items and Maori games was enthusiastically received by tho audience. Tho record success of tho concert was in no small measure due to the excellent preparatory arrangements mado by Rev. W. B. and Mrs Pickering. Mr M. Alpass was a visitor to Wellington this week. Mr J. Reidy, of Waipukurau, is the guest of Mr D. Kelly, Konini. Mrs J. G. Swainsion has been visiting Wanganui as the guest of her mother, Mrs C. Avery. Mrs E. Scandrett and S. T. Tinnoy have returned from a fortnight’s holiday spent Foxton.
