GRAVE OFFENCE
THEFT OF POSTAL PACKETS. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Sept. 9. “Tho judges look upon this class of offence with gravity,” said His Honour Sir Alexander Herdman in the Supremo Court when Harold James Henry Smith, aged 30 years, was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment on each of two charges for the theft of postal packets, tho sentences to bo concurrent. Accused had been 23 years in the postal service and had held various positions of trust, ranging up to that of assistant-postmaster, said his counsel. Following upon an illness in his family he took to stimulants and degenerated mentally. Prior to his present lapse Smith had borne an exceptionally good character.
