WOODVILLE

BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING. (From Our ,Own Correspondent). The usual monthly meeting of the Woodville Borough Council was held last evening, there being present His Worship the Mayor (Mr 11. P. Horne), Crs. Rose, Mackie, Harding, Nicholas, Sutton, Johnston, McCormick and Pickering. Cr. Rudrick was granted leave of absence. Mr S. V. Brightwell wrote protesting against a small charge made against him for repairs to the footpath fronting his shop promises.—The Mayor stated that the charge had been mado in accordance with tho by-laws and moved that tho latter be received. Cr. Nicholas seconded. Cr. Mackie considered that in view of the small piece of work done the charge was hardly warranted. He said he had been informed that when, the new shop front had been put in particular care had beon exorcised to bring the lino of the shop entrance up to tho lino of the footpath, but that when finished the footpath was slightly higher than tho entrance. This had been chipped away and made flush with the shop entrance. Cr. Sutton considered that tho charge made in this case was unreasonable. Crs. Pickering and Johnston both stated that they had inspected the footpath in question and that tho work dono was very small. The letter was received. Te Defence Department wrote asking for permission to use the Recreation Ground for senior cadits’ annual training.—Granted. The Main Highways Board wrote advising that the board would contribute £438 of the £656 estimated to complete the tar sealing of Vogel Street, also that it would contribute £IOO of the £2OO estimated to regrade Vogel Street from Ross Street to Tay Street. Mr Martin, solicitor to tho Municipal Association, forwarded an opinion that in cases where the width of footpaths had been reduced, and electric light poles were consequently in the roadway, the council would be liable in case of accident, but that the council had the power to compel the Power Board to remove any such poles back to the curbing.—lt was decided to request tho Power Board to move tho poles. The town clerk reported that £432 5s lOd had been received during tho month, payments had amounted to £416 2s 5d and there was a credit at tho bank of £675 16s 3d. During tho month licenses had been issued as follow Motor drivers, 2; building permits, 4; public halls, 3; heavy traffic 1. On the motion of Cr. Sutton, it was decided that tho cemetery committee wait on the county council at their next meeting with the object of endeavouring to get tho county council to do some very necessary work at tho cemetery gates whereby cars could be parked there in safety. In answer to Cr. Mackio, the town clerk slated that the timber for lining the sleeping quarters at the Fire Brigade Station had been ordered, but as yet had not arrived. Cr. Roso asked if the works and finance committee had gone into the matter of the collection of rubbish from private houses. Tho Mayor stated that tho matter had not yet been 6idered as it would mean tho striking of an additional rate. Cr. Pickering moved and Cr. Harding seconded, that the council tender its congratulations to the Mayor and Mayoress on thoir recent wedding. Cr. Nicholas endorse the motion, which was carried unanimously. The Mayor acknowledged tho congratulations, on behalf of himself and Mrs Horne. WOODVILLE DAIRY COMPANY. Tho annual meeting of the Woodvillc Co-operative Dairy Coy., Ltd., was held in the Foresters’ Hall yesterday afternoon the chairamn of directors, Air S. Mclntosh, presiding over an attendance of 32 shareholders. In moving tho adoption of tho report and balance-sheet, tho chairman stated that the company had had a fairly good season., The supply had been well maintained and 20 tons more cheese had beon manufactured than in tho previous season. The outfit for the year had as usual been cosigned, the average price being 92s per cwt. The company had been ablo to pay out Is 6id per lb. of butter-fat Tho overhead charges of tho company were small and large savings had been effected in crates and rennet. Tho store account showed a profit of £l3O, this representing a profit of 2£ per cent, on the turnover which had increased considerably. The interest account was in a good position and arrangements had been made with tho Bank of New Zealand to do away with tho joint and several guarantee. Tho directors had decided to adopt the standardisation this season and portion of the plant was already at the factory. The motion was seconded by Air J. C. Bolton and carried. An election for two directors resulted in the sitting members, Alessrs T. A. B. Sinclair and D. McGregor, being returned. Alessrs Dempsy and Litchfield (Palmerston North) wore re-elected auditors. Air S. Alclntosh moved, in accordance with notice of motion, “that the articles of association of the company be amended by tho addition of a now article giving shareholders who aro required to take up further shares under article 5 the option of having id per lb. butterfat deducted from the excess butterfat in lieu of taking up further shares.” After considerable discussion the motion was put to the meeting and lost on a show of hands. Votos of thanks were accorded tho factory manager, tho secretary and staff and tho chairman.
