OLD CASE RECALLED.
(To the Editor.) Sir,—l was very interested to read in Monday’s “Evening Standard” a report that the notorious Von Veltheim had again como into the limelight, so to speak. When told in 1923 that he was discharged from prison and deported back to Germany, I wondered where he would eventually turn up. During tho case of 1908 when he was on trial for blackmailing the Jew financier, Mr Solly Joel, for £20,000, I personally saw him leave the Old Bailey accompanied by the late Detective-In-spector Arthur Pentin, who had charge of the case. As he was 6ft 3ins in height and big in-proportion, it is no wonder he was easily recognised when he returned to his old haunts, the diamond fields in Johannesburg. His true name—Karl Kurtz—was given out by tho detective during his evidence, the name of Von Veltheim (also Count Von Veltheim) being used by Kurtz during his amazing career. "When arrested by Detective-Inspector Pentin in an exclusive Paris hotel, he had booked as Count Von Veltheim.—l am, etc., N. BROWN, nee Pentin. R.M.D. Ashhurst, September 11, 1929.
