WELFARE OF BOYS
CRITICAL PERIOD OF LIFE. “BIG BROTHER” MOVEMENT. (By Telegraph—Special to Standard.) AUCKLAND, Sept. 12. Over 100 boys are at present being cared for by the “Big Brother” movement that is being conducted under the auspices of the Auckland Y.M.C.A. Mr Vernon Drew, the general secretary, stated to-day that the growth of the movement reflected the economic conditions in the city. Boys who appeared before the Children’s Court and who were ordered to be placed under control foi one or two years had the privilege of being cared for by a “Big Brother.” Each boy was given free membership of the boys’ division. The system had been productive of excellent results and great benefit had resulted from the influence of selected young men upon boys who were passing through a critical time of life as far as mental and moral growth were concerned. Over 400 boys had been placed under such supervision since the inception of tho movement in Auckland a few years ago.
