DAIRY INDUSTRY

NEW ZEALAND FARMERS’ DAIRY UNION. At the annual meeting of shareholders of the New Zealand Farmers’ Dairy Union, on Saturday afternoon. Mr Hubbard asked if the Control Board's statement that it had reduced freights and insurance was cor-re-c-t. The chairman (Air J. A. Nash, M.P.) replied that there had been ’ a reduction in freights but it was not definite that the board had brought these down. Undoubtedly, the board had saved the farmers a great deal as far as insurance was concerned. If they had not got those concessions the industry would have been so much the worse off. Air Hubbard asked if the board had fulfilled their promise that New Zealand butter was now benig sold as such. Air Nash stated that they had accomplished that. Continuing, he stated that the board had ."nade a big loss when they had tried 10 fight Tooley Street. The farmers, hcnever, had by a two-thirds majority agreed to the setting up of the board, giving the powers that had been conferred upon it. He, personally, had been opposed to it. They did not want twelve members on the ooard and they did not want Government nominees. He would say that six members would be sufficient. He would go further and say that, if the board were made part and parcel of the Aleat Board, it would be to the benefit of the producers.

Air Gretton moved that the company recommend that the Dairy Control Board be reduced to six members and that the levy on companies be reduced.

Air Beckett seconded the motion which was carried unanimously. The chairman referred to the valuable services rendered by the former manager, Air A. G. Morgan, and it was decided to vote him a bonus. A_ vote oi thanks was accorded the staff, special mention being made of the lorry drivers. a-
