BOVVLING, CROQUET AND TENNIS. TAICARO CLUB'S ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Takaro Bowling, Croquet; ancl f ieniiis Club was held last evening, Mr A. Uooksley presiding over a good attendance. Speaking to the annual report (previously published in tho '‘Standard”) and tlio balance-sheet, the chairman congratulated tho club on a successful year. The standard of play had been high, particularly in the croquet section. The equipment was in better order than it had ever been previously. Air Cooksley made feeling reference to the sad death of tho treasurer, Air W. Alundy. To perpetuate his memory a photograph had been hung in tho pavilion. He was also sorry to refer to the deaths of Colin Telford and Miss Rita Boldt, whose places' would be hard to fill. Proceeding, the chairman said that the greens wore in sufficiently good order for the official opening to take place next week. Mr Cooksley concluded by paying tributes to the assistance received by him from the other officers of the club— Messrs S. Wilson (secretary), 11. B. Frco (vice-president) and A. C. Cameron (treasurer) and also the lato Mr Alundy and Air A. E. Alayoll (formerly secretary). The report was adopted. Invitations from tho Eoxton (October 2), Northern (October 9) and Levin (October 9) Clubs for the bowling section _to bo represented at their official opening days were received and referred to tho section committee. The resignation of Miss Pye was accepted with regret. Aliss Pye is removing to Wanganui. It was decided to hold the official opening on Saturday, September 28, at 1.30 p.m. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Patron, Air R. Tanner; vice-presi-dents, Alossrs H. B. Free and A. Cooksloy; secretary, Mr C. Waugh; treasurer, Air A. Cameron; committee, Alessrs J. Morgan, H. B. Free and Al. Newth (bowling), Alessrs E. J. Norris, H. Bentley and J. Gallichan (tennis), croquet representatives to bo appointed later; green superintendent, Air Alorgan; honorary auditor, Air T. B. Arlidgo. Tho election of a president was held over for a month, Mr Cooksley agreeing to act in that capacity for that period. Tho retiring secretary, Air S. Wilson, was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his past services and ho was voted an honorarium. A bonus was voted to tho caretaker, All- D. Gillies. Votes of thanks were accorded tho auditor, Air Arlidgc, the borough curator, Air P. Black, and tho IJrcss.
SECTION REPORTS. The report of the tennis committee stated that on Labour Day a party of eight ladies and eight men had visited tho Bulls Club and, after an enjoyable day, were defeated by more experienced players. Thanks wero extended to Mr Duckworth for the presentation of a cup for the junior men members of the club. Unfortunately, sufficient juniors had not entered for the competition so that it was made an open men’s handicap singles. Air L. Gibson won the cup and Air R. Langford was runner-up. Mr Alayejl had donated two trophies for competition amongst the ladies. A ladips’ handicap was conducted, Mies B. AlcFarlane winning with Airs Trevor run-ner-up. The club was unfortunate in losing the services of one of the keenest members, Air A. E. Mayell, who had been transferred to Ohakune. The death of Colin Telford, a junior mem- 1 her of the club was recorded with regret and sympathy was extended to his parents. Through the efforts of Messrs Cooksley and Duckworth it had been found possible to conduct club championships, Aliss B. AicFarlane winning the ladies’ cup and Air L, Gibson the men’s trophy. Twelve inter-club matches had been played of which seven had been won. The incoming committee wero recommend- 1 ed to continue holding flannel dances for the purpose of providing funds for a volley board. The bowling section reported that .several inter-dub matches had proved most enjoyable. The club had played Manawatu for the Takaro Cup, win-
ning after a good game. The cup had later been lost to Northern. Challenges had been entered for the Manson and Barr Cup and tho Ainslie Shield, but these had been unsuccessful. Mr Alorgan was runner-up in the champion of champion singles. Messrs Tanner and Alorgan had represented the club in the pairs tourney and Alessrs Newth, Tanner, Littlejohn and Alorgan in the champion of champion rinks. One rink had entered for die centre’s Easter tournament. The croquet committee reported keen interest during the year in club matches, 14 games out of 16, having been won, scoring 407 points out of a possible 416 and securing the banner i margain of 16 points. Tho club had held the Pollock Stars, Corbridge otars and Bennett Buttons at intervals. Airs Littlejohn and Airs Lang•d still held the Corbridge Stars. Miss AicFarlane and Airs Simpson bad done very well in tho Alanawatu Croquet Association’s tournament. Miss McEarlane had won the handicap A singles and Airs Simpson the B championship singles and the B handicap singles. Together they had won the handicap duobles. These two players had also been successful at the Hastings tournament, winning the A and B handicap singles and the handicap doubles. Mrs Alitcheli and Airs Lyall were the holders of the Usmar Ferns. Mrs Simpson and Airs Trevor held the Tanner Cup. Supper was provided by the ladies at the conclusion of the meeting.
