RACING NEWS.

FROM STABLE AND COURSE. (By “Binocular.”) Racing at Avondale and Ashburton on Saturday. The Napier Park meeting will not eventuate till October s—not September 21 as had been earlier reported. Piuthair, who ran second to Kick Off at Wanganui on Saturday, claims an entry for the Avondale Cup on Saturday. Gesture, a Chief Ruler—Nottava filly from Mrs McDonald’s establishment at Awapuni, figures in the Avondale Stakes. Hoylako (8.0) beat Oratrix (8.9) out of a place in the Metropolitan Handicap. Hoylake meets the latter on 41bs. worse terms in the New Zealand Cup. Pink Note carried 7.8£ in last year’s New Zealand Cup and the Paper Money-All Pink glding has been allotted 7.9 for the big event next November. ,

It is reported that the former Dominion sportsman, Mr J. B. Reid, who is now domiciled in England, has sold Black Watch for 3000 guineas.

While the Fordell stable of F. Tilley did not win the double on Saturday at Wanganui, that mentor won two of the three principal races with Laughing Prince and Consent.

The absence of Prince Humphrey and Reremoana robbed the Eclipse Stakes of much of its interest at Wanganui on Saturday and backers of Laughing Prince had to accept a very email price.

The only two favourites to win at Wanganui on ' Saturday were Laughing Prince and Consent, although two in Isa and Singer returned their backers at least a portion of their original investment.

11. Burt, the local hurdle and steeplechase jockey, who did not originally intend taking out a riding license this season, is back in the active ranks and be brought off a surprise win on GlengarilF at Wanganui on Saturday.

The Papakura trainer, J. T. Jamieson, has started six horses in five races this season for four wins and a second, four different horses supplying this record. They represent, however, only 20 per cent, of the horses this trainer has to race.

Count Cavour carried 9.0 in last season’s New Zealand Cup, and has been handicapped as a back number at 8.3 in this year’* contest. The old fellow is now being speeded up at Ricearton and, all going well, he will make another bid in November.

Oratrix won last year’s New Zealand Cup with 7.1, beating Rapier (9.0) by half a length with Hoylake (7.0) the same distance back. Rapier has gone up 61b, Hoylake 91b. and Oratrix 131 b for the forthcoming contest.

Toxeuma is reported to bo giving every satisfaction at Greenmeadows. He will be raced at Hastings and Napier and then go on to Trentham to compete in the Harcourt Cup. which was originally designated the Champion Plate.

The southern owner, Mr G. A. Kain, has been offered by cable a colt by Abbots Trace from Lady Juror as a stallion. Both sire and dam were good performers, Lady Juror having ranked as one of the best three-year-olds of her time.

A baker’s dozen horses may make the trip from Awapuni to the Hawke’s Bay meeting on Saturday week. Although Sunart did not give a very promising performance at Wanganui, the old fellow .•night do better in the Tomoana Hurdles at Hawke’s Bay.

King Acre may be given his first outing for the present season at the Hawke’s Bay fixture, the big Acre gelding having been accorded a nomination for tho Trial Stakes in which two other locals in Winlock and Tea Taster alto figure.

The Glenaray Handicap, a hack cvrnt which is contested over one mile at tho Hawke’s Bay fixture at the end of the month, find* the Awapuni representatives Disrank, The Masher and Arrowhead therein —a useful trio.

Roundelay, who was installed favourite for tho maiden event on the opening day at Wanganui, will in all probability be given his next outing in the Hawke’s Bay Guineas in which King Hal will also compete. The latter has not shown to advantage over sprint distances and the mile might well suit him better.

Two members from G. New’s stable in Blimp and Sea Soout will contest the Spring Handicap and the Nursery Handicap at the Hawke’s Bay meeting, while in the Flaxmere Handicap at the same fixture now locals in Archoria, Pari and Arrowhead have been accorded nominations.

An interesting entry for the steeplechase events at the Auckland spring meeting three weeks henco is Calithe, who has been racing very consistently on the flat. His owner has won three races on the chestnut in races confined to amateur ridem, so that Calithe is well up to weight. This hack has also been nominated for the Mitchelson Cup.

Spaco was booked for Gold Tinge on the Sydney steamer from Wellington last week, but, as previously announced, the connections of the Paper Money gelding decided to cancel the trip. Gold Tinge’s mission this spring will be the Dunedin Guineas, and ho will remain in W. J. Tomkinson’s stablo at Addington.

It would seem as if there arc more two-year-olds than ever this season, comments “Early Bird.” There are 29 left in next, Saturday’s Avondale Stakes, and 33 in the A.R.C. Welcome Stakes, to bo run threo weeks hence. In the Ellerslie race 17 youngsters ooine from stables outside the province. Forty two-year-olds have been entered for the babies’ handicap on the second day of the A.R.C. meeting.

One of the finest-looking horses in work in the district is tho three-year-old colt Merry Melody, by Catmint —Merry Roe, therefore a full-brother to Merry Mint (says tho Hawke’s Bay Trfbune). As a two-year-old he was given every chance, and was only raced in tho autumn on a few occasions. Exceptionally well has he done of late, and his track work at present points to him doubly repaying trainer W. Griffiths for the great patience he has taken with this handsome colt.

When Mr A. B. Williams purchased the English maro Cymeno for 2,250 guineas, she had a foal at foot by Limond, and was in foal to Limond. The youngster is identical with tho two-year-old Cylinder, in J. 11. Jeffcrd’s team, who is selected as a likely candidate for the Avondale Stakes. Cymene’s second production for her new owner was nlso a colt, and he is at present at Hororata. Cymene missed last term and is to visit Hunting Song this season.

The Nassau horse Historic will probably make his next appearance at tho Avondale Jockey Club’s spring meeting, where he claims an engagement in the Avondale Cup. Ho is the early favourite for the New Zealand Cup, and should he succeed at Avondale there are less things likely than his becoming a warm favourite for the big Ricearton twomiles. RACING IN AUSTRALIA. SYDNEY.. Sept. 16. The A.J.C. Stewards found that the non; registration of the New Zealand horse Tcri was an oversight, but decided to deprive the owner, Mr Hume, of the Wairarapa, of the third place gained in the Campsie Handicap at Canterbury races on September 7. directing that the prize money bo refunded. The jockey Cook was exonerated for having allegedly broken his engagement to ride Crucis in the Chelmsford Stakes. Tho trouble was due to a misunderstanding. WITHDRAWAL OF RAMULUS. SYDNEY, Sept. 16. The horse kicked himself while running in the Tramway Handicap on Saturday, and a leg filled. Rainulus is being taken out of work. JOCKEY’S ESTATE. MELBOURNE. Sent, 16. Tho estate of the jockey Cairns has been valued for probate at £1421. TROTTING. EARTHQUAKE RELIEF MEETING ABANDONED. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN .Sent. 16.
