AMATEUR TOURNAMENT. OXLEY BEATS G. THOMAS ON POINTS. At the, amateur boxing tournament in Wtllington last night the best bout was between G. Thomas, the amateur lightweight champion of Wellington, and hi. Oxley, of Pahiatua, who was the Manawatu representative at the New Zealand championship tourney at Groymouth. In a stirring encounter, Oxley outfought tho local champion and took a decisive and popular decision. Details of the bouts aro as follow: MIDDLEWEIGHTS.

W. Holdom, of Pahiatua and R. Chalklen. both of whom scaled 10.-it 10lb., opened their discussion quietly. The Wellington man landed to tho nose with a straight left in the second session and caused lioldom to fly signals of distress. They warmed up in tho third round, both planting hard lefts which brought blood from nose and mouth. Holdom .did best in tho fourth round, trying hard for a deciding blow with the right. Chalken, however, continued to have the best of tho exchanges and wont on to win a clearcut victory. LIGHTWEIGHTS.

E. Oxley (9st 61b), of Pahiatua, opposed G. Thomas (9st 71b), and took the skin off tho Wellington champion’s nose with a right uppercut in the opening round. Oxley was tho Manawatu representative at the championship tourney at Greyiaouth, and is an able exponent of the art. Thomas got busy in tho second session, and landed hard with a couple of left hooks, but tho Pahiatua man evened up with a hard right to tho side of the head. Oxley had tho champion’s mouth and nose flying red signals in the third session, in which ho boxed well. Tho fourth round had the crowd on its feet. Thomas waded in to finish his man, but Oxley, • boxing coolly and cleverly, met him with wFiizzing uppercuts, snappy lefts, and an occasional right swing, Thomas fought with all his accustomed spirit and determination, but for once he had moro than met his match. Oxley had the champion’s face well marked before tho final gong clashed, and went on to score a decisive and most popular verdict. It was a stirring display by two clever and hard-hitting boxers, and Lie crowd Thoroughly onjojed tho willing exchanges. A. Gandy (Palmerston North), 10st., met J. Mansfield (9st 121 b), but neither was able to reveal much science of tho art. _ r L’hore was a good deal of clinching in tne first two rounds, and Mansfield was guilty of holding moro than once. They fought in the last round, and the Palmerston North lad did a bit better at this, but could not pull up the leeway on points, and a colourless contest ended in Mansfield’s favour.

J. Fulton, of 11.M.5. Dunedin, took the ring against 11. Thomas, both scaling 9st 101 b- The decision went to Thomas, but Thomas mado a game showing. WELTERWEIGHTS. Tho decision jn the bout between A. Hart (lOst 51b.) and C. Knox 10st) went to the latter. FEATHERWEIGHTS. R. Coughlan (Palmerston North), (Bst 81b), and C. Hoskyn (Bst 101 b), were an ill-assorted pair. Tho Wellington lad had a big advantago in height and reach, and the smaller lad hacf difficulty in getting past hie opponent’s extended left. Hoskyn had all tho best of the onesided argument, though the little Palmerston North visitor fought back like a wildcat when cornered. There was only ono possible verdict, and Hoskyn got it, though a salvo of applause followed tho game little visitor from tho ring. J. Donoghue (Bst 131 b) beat A. Pepper (9-rt) on points, and C. Doherty (7st 41b) was too clever for J. Merrilees (7st 101 b). J. Milno (7st 121 b) and L. C. Higgs (7et 101 b) Inside matters extremely i|iteresting. The former, who hails from Palmerston North, bad a peculiar quick crouch, which nonplussed his opponent for a time, but Higgs met this by uppercutting. Higgs showed pretty 1 footwork in the second round, and scored freely with snappy lofts to tho face. Higgs had all tho best of the last round, though the Palmerston North lad forced him to do some lively ducking over tho last stago of tho journey. Tho verdict went to Higgs by a wide margin. PAPERWEIGHTS. L. Larsen (6st 61b) gained tho decision over 11. Ward 6st 101 b) whilo tho bout between G. Herbert (4st 101 b) and L. Bromfield (4st 121 b) was declared to bo a draw.
