PALESTINE RIOTS

DRAMATIC INCIDENT. HOW BATTLE WAS STOPPED. CORRESPONDENT’S STORY. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) (United Service.) LONDON, Sept. 15. How a British non-commissioned officer and nine men belonging to the Green Howards, a Yorkshire regiment, stopped a battle in Palestine is related by the Daily Mail’s special correspondent at Nazareth. Tho correspondent states: “It was one of the most dramatic incidents of the whole trouble. The non-commis-sioned officer’s party, which was the only force available, was . hurriedly dispatched from Nazareth to a neighbouring village to hold armed raiders in check, pending tlie-arrival of reinforcements. The party found a strong force of Jews and Arabs facing each other iu battle array, with dead on either side. Despite the strength of the combatants the non-commis-sioned officer unhesitatingly and courageously marched his little detachment between the rival forces, defying them to fire on the British flag. The Arabs drew back, and the Jews, who were weaker, were glad of the interruption and retreated. “Presently more Green Howards arrived. The Arabs then became more belligerent and began firing, but, luckily, harmlessly. Lancers dashed up in armoured cars and began encircling the raiders for the purpose of securing their arms without bloodshed. An armoured car broke down and the Arabs then dashed through. Forty Green Howards pursued and a running fight resulted, the Arabs losing 16 dead and wounded. Later they came 'in and surrendered their arms and ammunition, pledging themselves not to participate in further disturbances.”
