NAVAL LIMITATION
LONDON CONFERENCE. (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) (British Official Wireless). Received September 17, 12.50 p.m. RUGBY, Sepi. 16. The scope of the Five-Power Naval Conference will be much wider than has been generally supposed. It is now settled that the conference should be the adjourned Washington Conference, which would not otherwise have met until 1931. The Powers will therefore be invited to come to London to discuss the whole question of naval disarmament, and may take a further substantial step in this direction and then go to the League of Nations Preparatory Committee on Disarmament to deal with land and air disarmament.
MISS ISHBEL MACDONALD. NEW YORK SOCIETY AGOG. SHOALS OF INVITATIONS. (Australian Press Association.) Received September 17, 1.30 p.m. LONDON, Sept. 16. When Mr Ramsay MacDonald packs for his American visit, Miss Ishbel MacDonald, his twenty-six-year-old daughter, will be in charge of the operations. While the attention of the world s statesmen will be directed to Mr MacDonald, the eyes of every woman, in America will be turned to the daughter, the hostess of No. 10 Downing Street, who has been described by the Queen as a “thoroughly charming girl.” Miss Ishbei bids fair to be the 1929 “Belle of New York.” It is learned that all New York Society is anxious to meet her, as the fame of the Prime Minister’s daughter has spread far and wide. They wish to honour the girl who does not smoke and does not dance, who is versed in domestic virtues and, while looking after the Primo Minister’s important guests, finds time to play an important part in London’s municipal and social work. Hundreds of invitations from American hostesses and public bodies are pouring into Downing Street. The guests will see a slim, upright girl with a mass of fluffy brown hair, who speaks in a low, even voice, which now and again breaks into an infectious laugh.
