W.C.T.U. (From Our Own Correspondent). PAHIATUA, Sept. 19. At tho monthly meeting of the W.C.T.U, Mrs H. Patoraon presided over a good attendance of numbers Miss JStreet the well-known English authoress travelling organiser for the Christian Endeavour, gave a short address on some of her impressions of New Zealand. She was struck by tho abscnco of women in tho New Zealand Parliament, whereas in Great Britain, where they have only recently gained the franchiso for women, there aro 13 women members. CARNIVAL JOTTINGS.

Interest in the carnival is at a high pitch. On Tuesday evening the euchre tournament at tho Masonic Hall in favour of Miss Phyllis Mills was a splendid success, the first prize a quarfer ton of coal, proving a great attraction. A function is to bo held in Mangatainoka to holp swell the votes of the same candidate.' Next week the Carnival Pierrots will render a number of songs and dances at tho King's Theatro in furtherance of Miss Dulcie Jones’s candidature. On Monday evening there was a gathering at the home of Mr and Mrs P. J. Matthews. The prizes in tho euchre tournament were won by Mrs P. Peterson and Mr A. C. Paget. The cushion donated by Mrs Benton was won by Miss Kathleen Dick with a guess of 116, the correct number being 117. BOROUGH COUNCIL. A special meeting of the Pahiatua Borough Council was hold on Monday evening, His Worship the Mayor presiding. The recent death of Mr G. C. Millor, the late town clerk, has left an important office vacant and a special meeting was necessary to make arrangements. Tho following resolution was passed at the commencement of tho meeting-: “That this council tender to the widow and family of Mr G. C. Miller, late town clerk, its sincere sympathy with them in their bereavement and places on record its appreciation of the many good qualities he possessed.” The vote of condolenoe was carried by the councillors standing in silence. The Mayor said that Miss Keddell who had been carrying out the duties of town clerk for tho past six weeks, could quite capably carry on in the meantime. PAHIATUA DAIRY COMPANY. The fourteenth annual meeting of tho Pahiatua Co-operative Lrairy Co., Ltd., was held on Monday last, Mr D. O’Brien presiding. The annual report stated that in both the butter and cheese departments there had been substantial increases in the average test, cream being 39.17 per cent, and milk for cheese manufacturing being 4.102 per cent. Changes had taken place in the staff. Mr F. Pedersen, the manager for the past eleven years, had accepted an appointment with a larjje Taranaki company and had been replaced by Mr L. Heayns, whose reputation as a first-class manager should win for him tho fullest confidence of the suppliers. Tho three vacancies on the directorate were filled by the election of Messrs C. Connell, W. Mangin and C. Isakson. The secretary submjtUed a comprehensive report on tho improvement in the grade of tho cream. The directors, this year intend to manufacture standardised cheese. At the conclusion of the meeting light refreshments were dispensed by several of the Mangamutu ladies who were accorded a hearty vote of thanks. PERSONAL. Mr W. C. Robinson is a visitor to Wellington. Mr H. D. Grocott visited Carterton during the week-end. Miss Bruhn, teacher at tho Ngaturi School, who recently underwent an operation for appendicitis, is convalescent at her home. Miss Eagle is relieving teacher at Ngatur.i. Sister Ellis, of the Pahiatua Hospital staff, returned last week from a trip to Christchurch. Mrs J. Worboys, senr., of Wellington, is tho guest of Mrs W. S. Ransom, Tiraumea Road.
