(From Our Own Correspondent). SHANNON, Sept. 19. Tho Borough Council meeting did not last long on Tuesday, Mr E. Butt presided. Also present were Crs. Hyde, Downes, Thwaites, Hook, Curran, junr., Anderson, and Curran senr. A letter was received from the Levin Borough Council forwarding an account for £1 Is for expenses in connection with the Palmerston North Hospital Board election.
Mr K. O. Olsen, wrote with reference to a communication he had received from the town clerk that a cow-shed erected by him was on the borough 6treet, pointing out that at the time of erection he was under the impression that the building was on his property. He asked the council for permission to leave the shed in its present position during the council’s pleasure. The road in question is used only bv himself, stated Mr Olsen. — It was resolved to grant permission to leave the shod in its present position, the permission to be revocable by the council at any time. The borough foreman reported that 64£ yards of metal were carted to Stout, Clap, ham, Margaret and Julyan Streets. The water pipes for extension to mains are to hand and the work of preparing the trenches ready for tho pipes is in progress. Fifty-eight chains of water tables have been cleaned out. In accordance with notice, Cr. Hyde moved “that the council take immediate steps to put in hand tho work of permanent surfacing the Main Highways in tho borough.” Cr. Thwaites seconded.— After a discussion in which all the councillors took part, the motion was lost. An offer from Mr R. J. Law to supply 100 cabbago trees free of cost for planting was accepted with thanks. Mr A. H. Richards offered to rent the Domain for grazing for two weeks, but the offer was not accepted.
Mrs D. McLaggan won the prize at tho croquet euchre party last Tuesday afternoon. About 4 a.m. on Wednesday an alarm of fire was sounded, it being discovered that a shop and dwelling in Ballance Street owned by Mrs E. McPherson was ablaze. The building, which had brick walls, was completely gutted and the occupier at tho time of the outbreak, Miss R. Scorrar, who had recently arrived from Auckland, lost everything. The shop was being fitted up to be opened in a day or two.
