FOXTON

(From Our Own Correspondent.) FOXTON, Sept. 18.

Mr A. Coughtrey had a narrow escape from losing his ear by fire on Sunday. The car had been undergoing cleaning operations 'during the morning when Mr Coughtrey had occasion to go to Moutoa, Unknown to hinr, a sack had been placed underneath the bonnet of the car to prevent the water from getting on to the plugs during hosing down operations. The removal of the sack had been overlooked and when in the vicinity of Popular Road Mr Coughtrey smelt smoke and pulled up. He had only recently had his brakes relined and thought they required adjustment, but on getting out of the car ho noticed smoke issuing from the bonnet. He quickly opened’ up the engine and discovered the sack alight. The capacity of the church was taxed to the utmost. Proir to confirmation Archbishop O’Shea, in a short sermon, lucidly explained the doctrine of the Church on the sacrament which he was about to administer, and after appropriately addressing the children he made an eloquent appeal to the people to fulfil the sacred trust which had been reposed in them as parents. Ho spoke at length upon the temptations and dangers which beset the' youth of to-day and the apparent disposition of many adults to treat lightly their natural obligations as guardians of the souls as well as the bodies of their children, and he exhorted them to rear their tharges in a proper Christian manner and to strengthen precept by good example in their daily lives.
