“BACHELOR FLATS.”
PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION. ATTITUDE OF AUCKLAND COUNCIL. (By Telegraph.—Special to Standard.) AUCKLAND, Sept. 17. i The erection of “bachelor” fiats within the city was opposed in a report submitted to the Auckland Town Planning Association by Miss Alice Basten on behalf of the Housing Group. Complete support was given the City Council in refusing to permit the erection of flats, the group’s report _ stating that they were highly undesirable from economic, hygienic and social considerations. Strong views were expressed upon the scheme from the social welfare aspect. Lower paid workers now in hostels and private homes would be tempted to share the cost of a flat in order to be free from the vSry wise restrictions imposed upon them for their own good. “These restrictions are not irksome,” the report stated. “Hostels not only give good value for the money received, but also allay the anxiety. of country parents, who feel that their young folk are safe amid the city’s temptations when they live at these places of accommodation. “Tho proposed scheme does not make any specific provision for the supervision of tenants from a moral viewpoint. The committee is of the opinion that buildings of the proposed character should be designed for the accommodation of one sex only.”
