SORTING OF EGGS.

NEW MACHINE IN OPERATION. Eggs were on the roll at the Auckland markets, on Tuesday morning, when Mr E. C. Jarrett, Government poultry instructor and grader of eggs tor export,, inspected a new machine for grading eggs by weight and testing tor quality. The machine lias been installed at the markets and is said to be the only one in use in either Australia or New Zealand. It is an English invention, and was first used by the Ministry of Agriculture in England. It consists of four tracks, each with four traps, through which the eggs fall according to size and weight. Tile average capacity is 2250 eggs per hour, the machine being fed by one girl, with a second girl to empty the trays into the grading boxes. Prior to the use of this machine grading has been done by hand. The testing apparatus has not yet been installed on the machine. It will test up to 2000 eggs an hour. An electric light is ' used which permits eggs to be candled singly in diffused daylight.
