BULB AND FLOWER SHOW. (From Our Own Correspondent). PAHIATUA, Sopt. 21. On Tuesday last the sixth annual spring flower show of St. Peter’s Anglican Church was officially opened by His Worship tho Alayor, Air J. D. Wilson. Tho judge, Air A. Eddie, commenting on the bulb section, said that ho was wonderfully well pleased. The winung blooms entered by Aliss Sheen, of Woodville, showed not so much as a blemish anvwhero on tho petals. Mr J. D. Wilson said that among tho other classes of cut blooms thero, wore a number of very good quality exhibits, although tho season had not been at all favourable for tho blooms. Tho sweets stall was in the chargo of Aliss Iv. Geange and Mrs H. Fenwick. Tho members of the Ladies’ Guild directed the luncheon and afternoon tea rooms. Too high praise cannot bo given tho secretary, Air A. W. Hamilton, whoso energy and enthusiasm contributed much to tho success of tho show. Aliss Shcon won outright tho Fenwick Cup for cut Blooms with a total of 71 points. Tho Ilodd Roso Bowl for tho decorativo section. wont to Airs H. Fenwick with 39 points. Miss AI. Ruskell won outright tho Rundlo Cup for neodlowork, securing 55 points. FIRE FIGHTING. At tho meeting of tho Firo Board this week tho chairman (Mr G. xl. Hodd) said that the position in regard to tho town water supply was serious. A fire might easily wipe out half of tho town. When Insueetor Hugo made his investigation early in tho year tho condition of tho water in Cambridge Street was very bad. It was thick with mud and tho pressure was very low. Fie suggested that a deputation from the board wait on tho council. CARNIVAL JOTTINGS. Tho last count to date in tho carnival competition resulted as follows: —Mrs A. J. Fair weather, 13,738; Aliss Dulcie Jones, 10,320; Miss Phyllis Mills, 9,120. AKITIO COUNTY COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of tho Akitio County Council was held in Pongaroa on Monday. It was decided to endeavour to arrango a conference with the Pahiatua County Council with a view to reaching an amicable settlement of tho disputes regarding road maintenance claims and the injunction to restrain tho Akitio County Council from removing shingle from tho Alakuri Stream. It was decided to support tho Wairarapa Progress Leaguo in its protest against tho Government’s proposals to withhold tho statutory grants to tho Alain Highways Funds. ANNIVERSARY SOCIAL. Tho weather was in an angry mood on tho occasion of tho Alakomako Alcthodist Church anniversary social, blit many friends from tho surrounding districts gathered in the hall which was tastefully decorated with greenery. Rev. W. B. Pickering presided. Tho Pahiatua choir, under tho capable baton of Air J. J. Boagey, rendered a number of fine anthems, glees and choruses. Violin solos by Aliss Daphne Ebbet, poi dances by Aliases Alahanga, elocutionary items from Aliss Sargent and Aliss AleQueen, and vocal items by Airs Boyens, Mr and Aliss Alahanga, Airs Ryan, Aliss D. Ebbet, Airs F. Ebbet and Messrs F. Clarke, W. Greaves and Lowe comprised "an admirable programmme. Rev. W. Bi Pickering said that services had begun in tho district some 38 years ago and ho noted with pleasure the presence of some who had been there in those early days. The present church was opened in 1916. Mr E., Vile proposed a hearty vote of thanks to all who had assisted in the function. After the singing of tho National Anthem supper was dispensed. PERSONAL. Mrs Irvine, wife of Rev. S. J. \V. Ir_vine, of Pongaroa, who has been an inmate of tho Pahiatua Hospital for tho past six months, is now ablo to return to her homo. Captain and Airs Rotherham of tho Temuka Salvation Army Boys’ Homo, aro at present staying with (heir relations, Mr and Airs G. SoWry, of Alangamutu. Aliss Nancy Husband, Pahiatua, is tho guest of Airs Campbell-Heard, Landsdowne.
