FOXTON.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) FOXTON, Sept. 20. An enjoyable social under the auspices of the Presbyterian Ladies’ Social Guild was held in the schoolroom on Thursday evening.. The hostesses were Mesdames Alex Ross, Satherley, Alexander and Martin. The competition winners were Mesdames Barron, McEwen, Misses McMillan, McEwen, Stevenson and Mr R. Speirs. Those contributing to the programme were Misses Wilson, I. Patterson and Jean Stevenson. The accompaniments were played by Miss Patterson and Mrs Thomson. During the recent school vacation the Education Board’s workmen effected repairs to the primary school roof, cleaned out the gutters, overhauled the heating system and laid down a 6torm water drain and constructed a sump for same. This latter work will obviate the accumulation of storm water on the south sido of the building. The friends of Mr AVadsworth, of the clerical staff of the local railway station, will regret to learn that as a result of his recent illness ho will be unable to resume work for about six months. Mr G. Wilson, of Palmerston North, who was sent down to act in a relieving capacity when Mr Wadsworth entered hospital, will continue to fill the vacancy. FIRE BOARD MEETING. The quarterly meeting of the Fire Board was held yesterday, being presided over by Mr A. H. Clerke (chairman). Also present were Messrs J. K. Hornblow and M. E. Perreau. The superintendent roported that during the quarter there had had been but one grass fire within the borough. The Under-Secretary wrote enclosing tho annual report of the fire brigades and also a report on fire matters in general. The appointment of capital expenditure fund commissioners was discussed and tho secretary was instructed to ascertain from tho Public Trustee the rate of interest obtaining with a view to having him appointed sole commissioner. The superintendent (Mr H. J. Reid) reported inter alia as follows: —During tho quarter the brigade strength has been 15 men and 1 messenger, a total of 16. Thero has been one call to a minor grass fire which was readily dealt with, no damage resulting. Ten practices have been held with an average attendance of 12 to 13. Tho engine, hose and equipment are in good order. Accounts amounting to £167 17s 5d were passed for payment.
