(From Our Own Correspondent). OTAKI, Sept. 20. Tho quarterly meeting of tho Otako Fire Board was held at tho firo station, Mr W. B. Smith presiding. Tho chairman pointed out that the demolition of half-burned buildings, which it was suggested tho Borough Council should give attention to, was a difficult matter to deal with, and for tho presont nothing could be done. Messrs Pallisor and Woodwood waited on tho board and asked for a hydrant and 200 feet of hoso, pointing out that such was nccossary in caso of fire. After the deputation had withdrawn it was pointed out that, if such a concession was granted to the beach residents, tho railway end and Rangiuru would malto similar requests. Tho railway end had previously done so. It yvas also pointed out that Inspector Hugo was adverso to granting such concessions and believed in one central brigade. In view of this it was decided to take no action in tho meantime, although tho beach residents wero commended for their desire to holp. Tho annual meeting of tho Otaki Croquot Club was hold at Mrs Bills’s residence when there were a good many members presont. Airs Cook occupied the chair. Tho election of officers resulted as follows: Chair, Airs Cook (in place of Airs Olliver, rcsignod); secretary. Airs Bills (re-elected); committee, Mcsdames Smith, Bramlcy, Symonds, Knight (re-elected), Airs Noble and Airs Lowry wero elected in tho piaco of Airs Wyatt and Airs Olliver. Fivo now members joined. Officers wero elected as follow ’ for tho Municipal Club: —Patronoss, Airs Brandon (ro-clcctcd); president, Dr. Atinoro (reelected); vice-presidents, Alcssrs Byron Brown, W. H. Field, Alarton Powncll, Mrs (Dr.) Milne; secretary, Airs L. J. Kilmister (re-clcctcd); assistant secretary, Rev. Mr Isaacson; committee, Mcsdames Hagen, Gillespie, Alorgan, Syr.nott, Shaw, Watt, Warnoek. A credit balance of £22 was reported. Tho opening day was fixed for October 23.
Tho rose-bowl competition ended on Wednesday when Alanakau B and Te Horo met in tho final. Tho former won, 3 —o, after a fair exhibition of hockey, the grass interfering with fast play. Alanakau kept their positions bettor than rheir opponents, but, nevertheless, tho latter played hard. Their backs, however, were of no assistance to the forwards, being too far from tho scene of play. Alanakau ran and hit well, and their goals (scored by Alisses Gardener, Lander, and Ceorge) wero well deserved. Alcssrs Kilmister and Tahiwi wero referees.
